How to Make a Simple Meal With an Unskilled Cook

It’s a weeknight, you just got home from work, you’re hungry, and the last thing you want to do is go to the store. And worst of all: You have little to no experience cooking! What do you do?

Enter Christian, boyfriend and (unprofessional) chef extraordinaire!

Who knew spaghetti sauce could be so easy? I tried to convince my partner, and she didn’t believe me! She usually eats spaghetti from the jar. I found a simple recipe online that required only the things that were in our pantry (I also brought home some side items from the store) and showed her how to make it, step by step.

And now, I will show you how to make the same recipe, and how to remove all the intimidation out of cooking a traditional meal.

“Keep it Simple, Sweetie”

My partner and I decided to make a non-meat sauce, but any meat can be added to this. My partner isn’t the most skilled in the kitchen so starting simple was essential, and this was a great way to prove to her that you don’t need meat for a tasty spaghetti meal.

The most critical first step is to collect all the ingredients. I wanted to show her how few ingredients were required and have them ready so she wouldn’t feel overwhelmed.

Oil and Garlic- Make It Tasty and Fragrant

1. The first step is to heat 3 tablespoons of olive oil into a bit pot.

2. Then throw in 7 cloves of minced garlic and a teaspoon of red pepper flakes. My partner struggles with spice and thought this may have been a little too spicy for her so feel free to cut the red pepper flakes down.

3. Mix that around a bit and let it cook for a couple minutes until the garlic becomes golden. She enjoyed mixing it up and smelling that delicious garlic smell!

Tomatoes and Seasonings- The Centerpiece of the Sauce

4. Once the garlic is gold, add two 28-ounce cans of crushed tomatoes to the pan.

5. Then come the seasonings:

• 2 teaspoons of kosher salt

• 1 teaspoon of onion powder

• 1 ½ teaspoons of Italian Seasoning (We added 2 teaspoons to give it a little more flavor)

6. Mix everything together and then let the sauce simmer over low heat for about 20-30 minutes to thicken. You can also add a little bit of tomato paste to increase the thickness, which we did because we both prefer a thicker sauce.

7. While that sauce is simmering, put water in a large pot over medium-high heat and add a little salt. Once it is boiling then it is ready for you to throw in your pasta noodles!

8. Cook the noodles for about another 10 minutes until soft but a little firm and strain them.

9. When the sauce is done, add a half teaspoon of lemon juice for some extra flavor

Voila! Put the sauce and noodles together and you got a spaghetti dish! We also did some sides of asparagus and already prepared garlic bread.

My partner was surprised how simple and unintimidating it was to make. I strongly urge you to give it a shot the next time you need a quick and easy, but still tasty, meal!
